HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

UNIT DESCRIPTION
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies. It applies to people who may be required to provide first aid in a range of workplace and community settings.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
- This unit provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to recognise and respond to first aid emergencies safely and effectively. Participants will develop an understanding of:
- How to recognise and assess an emergency situation, protect the safety of the rescuer, bystanders and casualty, and seek assistance from emergency services
- The DRSABCD action plan and the principles used to assess an unconscious, breathing or non-breathing casualty
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques for adults, children and infants, including correct compression and ventilation techniques
- The safe operation of an automated external defibrillator (AED), including following device prompts and maintaining minimal interruption to chest compressions
- Infection control procedures, standard precautions, personal protective equipment (PPE) and resuscitation barrier devices
- First aid principles, including duty of care, consent, respectful treatment, privacy, confidentiality, monitoring and casualty comfort
- First aid management for common injuries and medical conditions, including anaphylaxis, asthma, choking, bleeding, shock, wounds, nosebleeds, envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
- How to communicate incident details to emergency services, complete workplace or site incident documentation and provide an accurate verbal and written report
- How to review a first aid incident, recognise possible psychological impacts and access support when required
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
This single-unit enrolment is open to both international and domestic students aged 18 years and over. There are no formal prerequisite units for HLTAID011 Provide First Aid.
Applicants are required to provide evidence that they meet the academic and English language entry requirements for this unit.
In line with the 2025 Standards for Registered Training Organisations, prospective students are required to have their language, literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills reviewed before enrolment. This process helps the College determine whether the unit is suitable for the student and whether any additional support may be required.
Applicants who have successfully completed an AQF qualification delivered and assessed in English are deemed to meet the academic and English language entry requirements.
Students must have the physical capacity to perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor and at least two minutes of CPR on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface. Students who may require support should contact the College before enrolment to discuss the assessment requirements and available reasonable adjustments.
ASSESSMENT AND DELIVERY STRUCTURE
HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is delivered through a blended learning model that combines online theory with compulsory face-to-face practical training and assessment at the Sydney campus.
The unit is structured as follows:
Online Self-Paced Learning
Students complete learning content, readings, videos and Moodle activities online. These activities develop the underpinning knowledge required before students attend the practical session.
Online Knowledge Assessment
Students complete an online Moodle knowledge assessment covering emergency response procedures, first aid principles, legal and workplace considerations, infection control, casualty assessment, CPR, AED use and the management of common injuries and medical conditions.
Compulsory Face-to-Face Practical Training
Students attend a practical session at the Sydney campus to practise first aid procedures using adult and infant resuscitation manikins, AED training devices, first aid equipment, bandages, wound dressings, placebo medication training devices and PPE.
Practical Skills Assessment
Students must demonstrate CPR on adult and infant manikins, appropriate use of an AED, management of an unconscious breathing casualty and first aid responses for a range of injuries and medical conditions. Students also respond to at least one realistic first aid scenario without prior knowledge of the casualty’s condition, communicate with emergency services, provide verbal and written incident details and review the response.
The practical assessment is conducted in a realistic simulated workplace or community environment. This unit cannot be completed through theory-only or online-only assessment because students must demonstrate hands-on first aid and resuscitation skills using the required equipment.
RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS
Students are required to have access to a laptop or desktop computer and a reliable internet connection to complete online learning activities and the knowledge assessment.
Students must attend the scheduled practical session at the Sydney campus and should wear comfortable clothing suitable for kneeling and performing CPR on a manikin placed on the floor.
Mercury Colleges provides the resuscitation manikins, AED training devices, first aid equipment, training medication devices, bandages, dressings, PPE and incident-reporting documentation required for practical training and assessment.
EXIT POINT/AWARD
Students who successfully complete HLTAID011 Provide First Aid will be issued with a Statement of Attainment by Mercury Colleges.
This is a nationally recognised unit of competency delivered under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. It applies to people who may be required to provide CPR in a range of workplace and community settings.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
- This unit provides learners with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to recognise a cardiac emergency and provide CPR safely and effectively. Participants will develop an understanding of:
- How to recognise and assess an emergency situation and ensure the safety of the rescuer, bystanders and casualty
- The DRSABCD action plan and how to assess whether a casualty is unconscious and breathing normally
- The chain of survival and how to quickly access emergency services
- CPR techniques for adults, children and infants, including compression rate, depth, hand position and compression-to-ventilation ratios
- How to perform uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR and rotate rescuers while minimising interruptions to compressions
- The correct and safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), including following device prompts and delivering a simulated shock
- How to position and manage an unconscious breathing casualty and respond appropriately if regurgitation or vomiting occurs
- Infection control procedures, standard precautions, personal protective equipment (PPE) and resuscitation barrier devices
- Legal, workplace and community considerations, including duty of care, consent, privacy, confidentiality and the limits of the rescuer’s own skills
- How to hand over to emergency services, provide an accurate verbal report, review the incident and recognise when psychological support may be required

Students must also demonstrate at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an infant manikin placed on a firm surface.
